How to Prepare for Your Family Photo Shoot

How to Prepare for Your Family Photo Shoot

Family photo shoots should feel enjoyable.

Not stressful. Not chaotic. Not like another thing on your already long list.

Whether you have booked an outdoor lifestyle shoot in Surrey, a Day in the Life session at home in London, or a studio family portrait session, a little preparation can make the whole experience smoother and more relaxed.

The good news is that you do not need to overthink it.

Here is how to prepare for your family shoot in a way that keeps everyone calm and helps us create natural, meaningful images.

Choose Outfits That Feel Like You

One of the first questions parents ask is, " What should we wear for a family photo shoot?”

The simple answer is this. Choose clothes that feel comfortable and reflect your family’s style.

You do not need everyone in matching outfits. In fact, that can feel dated. Instead, think in terms of coordinating colours rather than identical clothes. Soft neutrals, denim, warm tones or gentle pastels tend to photograph beautifully outdoors in Surrey’s parks and countryside. In London, muted tones also work well against urban backdrops.

Avoid large logos, bold graphics and very busy patterns as they can distract from faces.

Comfort is key, especially for children. If something itches, pinches or feels unfamiliar, it will show in their mood. Well-fitted, soft fabrics almost always work best.

If you are unsure, I am happy to help you narrow down options before the shoot.

Think About Timing

When is the best time for a family photo shoot?

For outdoor sessions, soft natural light makes a big difference. Early morning or later afternoon often provides the most flattering light, especially during spring and summer in Surrey and London.

For younger children, try to book a time that fits around naps and meals. A tired, hungry toddler is rarely in the mood for photos.

For in-home Day in the Life sessions, we work around your normal routine. Sometimes the beauty is in the everyday moments, breakfast at the table, reading on the sofa, or a walk to the park.

Choosing a time when your children are usually at their best makes everything easier.

Do Not Over-Prepare the Children

This might surprise you.

Parents often feel they need to coach their children beforehand. Practice smiling. Practice standing still. Practice saying cheese.

In reality, that can create pressure.

Instead, tell them you are going to spend some time together having photos taken. Keep it light. Keep it simple.

I do not expect children to stand still and look at the camera the entire time. Some of the most beautiful images happen when they are moving, laughing, or cuddling into you.

If they are shy at first, that is completely normal. I take the time to let them warm up.

Keep Expectations Realistic

What if my child does not behave during the photo shoot?

This is one of the most common worries I hear.

Children do not need to behave perfectly. They just need to be themselves.

Family photography is not about rigid poses and forced smiles. It is about connection. A cuddle when someone feels unsure. A burst of laughter when someone pulls a silly face. A quiet moment between siblings.

If someone needs a snack break, we pause. If someone needs a cuddle, that becomes part of the story.

Try to approach the session as time together rather than a performance.

Bring the Essentials

For outdoor family shoots in Surrey or London, a small bag with a few essentials can be helpful.

Snacks that are not messy

Water

A small comfort toy for younger children

A spare layer in case the weather shifts

Keeping things simple avoids distraction while still giving you what you need if moods dip.

If we are shooting at home, have the main rooms you would like photographed lightly tidied. You do not need a perfectly styled house. Just clear surfaces and open curtains to let natural light in.

Trust the Process

Many parents worry about what to do with their hands, where to stand, or how to hold the children.

That is my job.

I guide you into positions that feel natural. I suggest movement rather than stiff posing. Walk together. Sit close. Talk to each other. Pick your child up. Let them climb onto your lap.

The aim is not perfection. It is interaction.

When you focus on each other rather than the camera, the images feel relaxed and genuine.

Prepare Yourself, Too

It is easy to focus entirely on the children and forget about yourself.

Choose an outfit you feel good in. Give yourself enough time to get ready without rushing. If hair and make-up help you feel more confident, plan that in advance.

Children often take their emotional cues from their parents. If you feel calm and positive about the session, they are more likely to feel the same.

What If the Weather Is Bad?

In the UK, this is always a fair question.

If we are planning an outdoor family shoot in Surrey or London and the forecast looks challenging, we can reschedule where possible. Overcast days are often ideal for photography, so light cloud is not a problem.

If the rain is heavy or the conditions are uncomfortable, we adjust. The goal is for everyone to feel relaxed, not cold and rushed.

How Long Does a Family Photo Shoot Take?

Most family sessions last long enough to capture variety without exhausting the children.

For outdoor lifestyle sessions, this usually means around an hour. For Day in the Life shoots, we spend more time together to capture natural moments throughout your routine.

I always work at a pace that suits your family.

The Most Important Thing

The most important part of preparing for your family shoot is your mindset.

These photographs are not about achieving picture-perfect children or a flawless home. They are about capturing your family as you are right now.

The gap-toothed smiles. The toddler curls. The way your child still reaches for your hand.

Families change quickly. Children grow. Stages pass.

If you arrive ready to enjoy the time together rather than control every detail, the images will reflect that ease.

If you are planning a family photo shoot in Surrey or London and have questions about locations, outfits or how to prepare, I am always happy to chat it through with you.

My aim is simple. To create relaxed, natural images that feel like your family.

Exactly as you are.
